Book Recommendations?
by Deaana (deaana)
at September 21st, 2008 (07:35 am)

I was figuring we could post some recommendations for any kind of vampire books, we could post what books/series we like and why we like them (without spoilers if possible). Please include the author and all the books in the series (if applicable) and if it's still in print.

I'll start off.

Blood Thirst by L. A. Freed
OUT OF PRINT - why I like it: It was the first novel I read about vampires, and the first storyline I'd ever experienced that didn't involved 'KILL THE VAMPIRES!!' kind of thing. I like Vampires, they're only human. *grins*

The Southern Vamp Series/Sookie Stackhouse Novels, by Charlaine Harris
(these are the books that the series True Blood is based)
1 - Dead Until Dark
2 - Living Dead in Dallas
3 - Club Dead
4 - Dead to the World
4.5 - One Word Answer (in Bite! Anthology)
5 - Dead as a Doornail
6 - Definitely Dead,
7 - All Together Dead
8 - From Dead to Worse
9 - Dead and Gone - (not yet published) Feb/May 09
Why I like them: Engaging and humorous writing, with some sex and romance thrown in. The mysteries keep you guessing.

Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer
1 - Twilight
2 - New Moon
3 - Eclipse
4 - Breaking Dawn
Why I like them: The story sucks me in, every time I reread it. I know some of you don't care for it, but I find myself caught up in it easily.

The Vampire Files by P.N. Elrod
01 - Bloodlist
02 - LifeBlood
03 - Bloodcircle
04 - Art in the Blood
05 - Fire in the Blood
06 - Blood on the Water
07 - A chill in the Blood
08 - The Dark Sleep
09 - Lady Crymsyn
10 - Cold Streets
11 - Song In the Dark
12 - Dark Road Rising (Not yet published)
Why I like them:The stories are set in the 1930s in Chicago, the mysteries involved revolve around the gangs and the main character himself is intriguing with different abilities that are P.N. Elrod's 'type' of vampire.

Johnathan Barrett Series:by P.N. Elrod
01 - Red death
02 - Death and the Maiden
03 - Death Masque
04 - Dance of Death
Why I like them:Set during the American revolution, the word 'vampire' isn't even mentioned until the last book in the series. Loosely connected to the Vampire Files, these vampires are of the same type.

Quincey Morris, Vampire:by P.N. Elrod
Why I like it: Quincey Morris is the cowboy character in Dracula, and his story of his undeath is told here, although his situation is not related to dracula' condition, it is still a fascinating read. Also loosly connected to the Johnathan Barrett Series and the Vampire Files.

Edited to add:
The Argeneau Vampires Series by Lynsay Sands
01 - A Quick Bite
02 - Love Bites
03 - Single White Vampire
04 - Tall, Dark and Hungry
05 - A Bite to Remember
06 - Bite Me if You Can
07 - The Accidental Vampire
08 - Vampires are Forever
09 - Vampire, Interrupted
10 - The Rogue Hunter
why I like them: These novels are all shelved in the romance section of the bookstore, they are wonderful, funny, and lighthearted, and quite addictive. The books themselves can be read in any order, they are only loosely connected. In these books, vampires are not evil creatures of the night at all, and I find that refreshing.

Love at Stake series by Kerrelyn Sparks
1 How to Marry a Millionaire Vampire
2 Vamps and the City
3 Be Still My Vampire Heart
4 The Undead Next Door
5 All I want for Christmas is a Vampire
6 Secret Life of a Vampire (mar 31st)
7 Forbidden Nights with a Vampire (apr 28th)
Why I like them: These novels are absurd and romantic and highly enjoyable. Each novel is a story in itself with the secondary characters becoming the focus of the next novel, but still incorporating events of the previous novels. And what could be hotter than a bunch of Scottish Highlander vampires with sexy accents?

1. Marked

Felix Gomez Series - by Mario Acevedo
1. Nymphos of Rocky Flats
2. X-rated Blood suckers
3. Undead Kama Sutra
Why I like them - Campy fun reads. Also the only vampire novel (Nymphos) to need to be declassified by the Department of Energy. If you like tongue in fang humor, don't let the titles deter you.

Victory Nelson PI - by Tanya Huff
(these are the books that Blood Ties are based on)
1. Blood Price
2. Blood Trail
3. Blood Lines
4. Blood Pact
5. Blood Debt

I would totally recommend the Hallows series by Kim Harrison. It isn't just a vampire series as the main character is a witch but the secondary character is an awesome vampire named Ivy. It's seriously addicting.

Tasty

I completely agree that the Sookie Stackhouse Novels are worth reading as well as the Twighlight novels. They are both very well written with intricate plot lines and well developed characters. Here are a few Vamp series that I recommend:

The Undead Series by MaryJanice Davidson

1. Undead and Unwed
2. Undead and Unemployed
3. Undead and Unappreciated
4. Undead and Unreturnable
5. Undead and Unpopular
6. Undead and Uneasy
7. Undead and Unworthy
Why I like them: The books will have you laughing out loud. Betsy Taylor is probably the worst vampire ever -- but in an endearing way. ^_^

The House of Night Series by P.C. and Kristin Cast

1. Marked
2. Betrayed
3. Chosen
4. Untamed (9/23/08!!!!)
Why I like them: It's basically Vampire boarding school. Think of it like Hogwarts, except Vampire style.

I just found Sookie a few months ago and love her to pieces.

Here are a couple other favorites

Felix Gomez - Mario Acevedo
Nymphos of Rocky Flats
X-rated Blood suckers
Undead Kama Sutra

Why I like them - Campy fun reads. Also the only vampire novel (Nymphos) to need to be declassified by the Department of Energy. If you like tongue in fang humor, don't let the titles deter you.

Victory Nelson PI - Tanya Huff
Blood Price
Blood Trail
Blood Lines
Blood Pact
Blood Debt

why I like them: The chemistry between the 3 main characters leaps off the page. I was sorry to see the series come to an end

Nymphos
vampire girl

You know, I did read the first book, Nymphos of Rocky Flats by Mario Acevedo, and I got totally grossed out when he poured blood on his pizza. What a waste of blood pizza. *giggle*

Let the Right One In

"Let the Right One In" (Also known as Let Me In) by John Ajvide Lindqvist

Fun fact: Author wrote the screenplay for the Swedish movie "Let the Right One In", which was released this year. Matt Reeves, who directed “Cloverfield,” is working on an American remake of “Let the Right One In,” reportedly due out in January 2010.

Why I like them: A story both violent and highly romantic that is steeped in unsettling moral ambiguity. The story is set in the Stockholm suburb of Blackeberg in 1982.

On another not, I can't believe Bram Stoker's "Dracula" is not on there, as well as Anne Rice's Vampire chronicles :]

Richelle Mead's VAMPIRE ACADEMY

Richelle Mead's Vampire Academy Series
1. Vampire Acadmey
2. Frostbite
3. Shadow Kiss
4. Blood Promise
Why I like them: They are YA books, so they are appropriate for a wide age group. These books give a take on vampires & their origin that is not typical.
